Finance Minister M Saifur Rahman has finally reduced tax on cellphone SIM cards from Tk 1200 to Tk 900 in the wake of a lot of criticism.
Though the finance minister reduced tax on SIM cards, he was critical of the hue and cry raised over the proposal for imposition of Tk 1,200 in VAT and supplementary duty on it.
"The [cat] has come out of the bag after I imposed tax on SIM card. It has been exposed how they [mobile companies] are exploiting them [mobile phone subscribers]", the minister noted.
He said two mobile companies in Pakistan obtained licence paying $582 million, whereas in Bangladesh the mobile operators have not paid a penny. Moreover, their call charges are very high, he explained.
Saifur claimed that he did the right thing by taxing SIM cards but the media's making it an issue and people's negative attitude forced him to reduce the tax.
