Teletalk SIM on sale at six times higher price

State-owned mobile phone company Teletalk's SIM (subscribers' identification module) card for celluar connection is now selling in the open market at a rate about six times higher than the company's offered price, even though the authorities have suspended distribution of subscription forms and have not appointed any dealer.
Some shops in Mohammadpur, Mirpur, Mouchak and other areas of the capital were found selling Teletalk SIM cards, attractive to cellphone users due to its free incoming call facility, at as high as Tk 10,000 for a connection whereas the rate offered by the company is Tk 1,800.


Private cellphone service providers charge around Tk 2.0 per minute for incoming calls from fixed phone operator state-run Bangladesh Telegraph and Telephone Board (BTTB).


Talking to The Daily Star, one shopkeeper selling Teletalk SIM cards at an exorbitant price said, "It's worth more as we had to risk a lot to collect an application form to get a SIM card."

Teletalk, managed by BTTB, suspended distribution of subscription forms on the second day after failing to manage a mad rush of enthusiastic customers and in fear that it would not have the technical capability to handle the large number of subscribers.


Meanwhile, marketing of Teletalk mobile phones may run into snags as BTTB employees yesterday announced they will refrain from any involvement in the distribution of Teletalk mobile service.


Unionists took the decision protesting the government's move to hand over the BTTB's mobile venture to a separate entity.
