Abu Dhabi-based Warid Telecom has deferred the commercial launch of its GSM mobile services for the third time.

The launch was earlier scheduled for March 26, coinciding with Independence Day. A company official said the operator pushed the deadline to mid-April, apparently timing it with the Bengali New Year’s Day.

Further competition in the fast growing mobile phone market is on hold—at least for now.
‘We will do it soon but I cannot specify the date,’ Warid’s CEO in Bangladesh Muneer Farooqui told bdnews24.com Wednesday.

Probably sometime in May or June, isn’t it?
‘Oh no, never that late,’ Farooqui said, without mentioning April.
He said Warid’s parent company Dhabi Group chairman Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan would visit Dhaka to inaugurate the network.

‘We are closely working with the chief adviser’s office about his visit,’ Farooqui said. Al Nahayan is also the education minister of the United Arab Emirates.

Warid Telecom will be the country’s sixth mobile phone operator. It paid $50 million in fees, acquired the licence in December 2005 and was mandated to hit the market within a year.

It had engaged Ericsson for the core network and transmission. Nokia got most of the base station supply while Motorola grabbed a smaller, similar deal in early 2006.
